Edge Relay Introduction

Edge Relay Introduction In early March of 2017 we released an incredibly innovative product called BlueCats Edge Relay, the response was immediate, and humbling. Since that time we have been fielding unprecedented interest from companies that want to understand more about how Edge Relay is going to help them better utilise existing Beacon networks, but more excitingly, from companies wanting to build new and innovative products with Bluetooth as the core foundation. The Origin of Edge Relay At BlueCats we have been developing world class Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) solutions since 2012, before iBeacon was coined. We know the strength of BLE, especially when it comes to Beacons in proximity and retail environments. However, there were constraints that we’re limiting Beacons true potential - Simply put, the constraints of iOS and Android meant we were playing the game by someone else's rules. We knew BLE had a lot more to offer, but we needed...

Beacon Insights Dashboard

Let me pose a variation on an old, but useful philosophical question. If a beacon transmits its signal into the surrounding space, but there is nothing around to hear it, does the beacon really exist at all? This may be contrived but actually highlights both a real world challenge in managing a beacon deployment and at the same time presents a great opportunity to gather decisive insights about when a smartphone enters specific locations that you care about. What are beacon visits and insights? Beacons are one-way transmitting devices, unaware of their surroundings. However when you pair them with a smart device you now have the opportunity to both monitor the state of your beacons (proving that they do in fact exist!) and at the same time use your knowledge of a beacon’s installed location (configured with rich meta-data in the BlueCats platform) to determine which devices have visited a location and when....

Preparing for Android N and iOS 10

It’s that time of year - the new Android OS, Android Nougat is out and iOS 10 is just around the corner. Over the last months we have been both testing the SDKs for any compatibility issues as well as investigating any behaviour changes related to Bluetooth scanning or beacon related functionality. The good (and admittedly boring) news is that there are not any significant changes for either platform. If you are currently running the SDK for either platform and have tested with iOS 9.0 and Android M you are likely good to go with the upcoming changes, however as always it is best to test it out for yourselves and let us know what you find. For best for performance we recommend updating to the latest production release of the SDKs (available for iOS and Android). Specifically BlueCats SDK Release 2.0.2 for Android includes some optimisations in scanning to maintain responsiveness...

BlueCats announces support for Eddystone Ephemeral Identifiers

New open BLE beacon format from Google enhances security for BlueCats beacons and platform BlueCats, a spatial intelligence platform that bridges the physical and digital divide to reveal untapped business opportunities, today announced backwards compatible support for Eddystone™, an open beacon format that supports Android and iOS devices. Working in collaboration with Google, BlueCats beacons and services will also take full advantage of the new privacy and security that Eddystone Ephemeral Identifiers (EIDs) provide. Eddystone-EIDs are designed for scenarios where businesses that deploy beacons want to manage access to the beacon signal for privacy- and security-sensitive applications. By now offering BlueCats customers beacons with support for Eddystone-EID, users can manage access to their beacons for use cases where security is paramount. “For years, BlueCats has been singularly focused on enabling our enterprise clients to scale BLE Proximity networks securely, facilitating collaboration between forward-thinking companies so they can realize incredible mobile experiences for their...
